Diana Armfield

Diana Armfield (b.1920) is a celebrated painter of still lifes, landscapes and flower studies, admired for her sensitivity to colour and the lyrical handling of paint. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1938 to 1940 and later at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, where she also taught. Early in her career, she worked in textile and wallpaper design, a discipline that informed her later understanding of pattern and rhythm in painting.

Armfield’s subjects are rooted in observation. Whether capturing flowers from her own garden, views of the Welsh landscape or intimate interior scenes, her work reflects a deep engagement with nature and atmosphere. Her compositions are loose yet deliberate, with transparent glazes and confident brushwork conveying movement and light.

Elected to the Royal Academy in 1991, Armfield is also a member of the Royal Watercolour Society, the New English Art Club and the Royal West of England Academy. Her paintings have been exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and with leading London galleries such as New Grafton and Browse & Darby. Works by Armfield are represented in public collections including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Contemporary Art Society and the National Museum Wales.

Of course life receives powerful negative forces as well as positive, but unless a harmony is achieved in the work, it can’t be art, only just a reflection of life. Great artists can reconcile in their work both the positive and negative.
